BrainWaves
We offer exciting opportunities for our members to gain new skills and qualifications.
Waves members can enrol on a supported living skills course run in conjunction with Kirklees College. A visiting lecturer comes to Waves for two days per week to teach both practical and classroom based skills. The curriculum is varied and engaging and covers: money handling, healthy eating, safety in the home, literacy, communication and much more. We visit shops, cafes, museums, and other local businesses to practice the skills that we have learnt.
Coming soon! As a registered accredited centre for ASDAN, we will be offering units in animal care, horticulture, shop work, sport & leisure, health & beauty, administration, health & social care, catering and supported living skills. We have modern and accessible kitchen facilities and a life skills classroom. We have our own animal centre, café / shop, and a large garden for horticulture. ASDAN students will also spend time using the fantastic facilities local to Waves. We have access to a leisure centre, a large pet/agricultural supplier, variedfood shops, plus train links to Leeds, Manchester and beyond.
We have an annual awards ceremony for Brainwaves, where we celebrate the many successes of our members.
Since our son Ben has been on the course he has learned many things from cooking to home safety and how to deal with money. His confidence and general demeanour has also increased as has his wicked sense of humour, which I am convinced is because of what he is learning. During the pandemic he was sent worksheets to our home which he did straight away. In short we are so grateful to Stella at Kirklees college and Karen at Waves who have had the belief in Ben and have helped him so much on his journey. Many thanks. xx
